Off to the ice, and the annual outdoor game in the NHL. The league typically plays New Year's day, and ventures into arenas not usually meant for hockey. This time it would be a baseball diamond, Citi Field, the home of the New York Mets, as the New York Rangers played the Buffalo Sabres. And it would be J-T Miller of the home town Rangers that was the hero in the 10th edition of the Winter Classic. And that is a look at the venue, with the Buffalo Sabres, and the New York Rangers making their way out onto the ice in the middle of the baseball diamond.
The Rangers, who have never lost an outdoor game, get on the scoresheet first, as Paul Carey is left all alone in front, and he fires one home, four minutes into the first.
The Blueshirts add to that a few minutes later -- Kevin Hayes with the puck, and he spins near the net, and his pass ends up on the stick of Michael Grabner, who pots it home. Clever pass, and the Rangers are in front by 2.
The Sabres take advantage of a powerplay early in the second to trim the lead, as point shot goes through a crowd, allowing Sam Reinhart to whack it home. Good work by the second year player to cut the lead to 2-1.
Early in the third, another point shot by the visitors leads to a goal, as Rasmus Ristolainen finds it way through a crowd. Henrik Lundqvist doesn't see it in the New York net. 2-2 game. No more scoring so we need overtime.
And in the extra session, the Rangers have a powerplay -- Kevin Shattenkirk's shot is stopped by Robin Lehner, but J-T Miller is johnny on the spot, and jams it home. The hosts are ecstatic, as Miller ends the game in front of 41,821 fans, and improve to four-and-oh in outdoor games.
