Storm Eleanor: Storm sweeps across Europe
[]
Winter Storm Eleanor has swept across Europe, causing considerable damage and disruption to several countries.
In the German city of Oberstdorf, the International Ski Federation was forced to cancel the fourth stage of the Tour de Ski competition. The ISF said in a statement that strong winds and heavy rain had made the competition unsafe for athletes.
In France, one man was killed by a fallen tree while skiing, and at least 26 others were injured across the country. With wind gusts recorded at more than 140 kilometers per hour, Storm Eleanor initially cut power to more than 220,000 households, though many have had their electricity restored. The storm also forced authorities to shut down the Eiffel Tower, and airports in cities like Strasbourg. Train services in Normandy were suspended as well.
In the United Kingdom, the storm left more than 100,000 homes without power. With winds of up to 160 kilometers per hour, the storm also damaged buildings and led to the closure of some bridges and roads.
