Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi on Tuesday said he hopes China and Japan can move bilateral relations in the right direction, adding that there are new opportunities for both countries.
Yang made the remarks during a meeting with Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida in Tokyo. The Chinese diplomat said sensitive issues should be handled appropriately to improve relations and Japan should deal with major issues by implementing the four documents which constitute the political foundation of bilateral relations.
Yang also reaffirmed China's stance on issues relating to the DPRK's nuclear program, saying the international community should aim for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and make efforts to encourage all parties to return to the negotiating table.
Kishida said there are new opportunities for bilateral ties and Japan is willing to work with China towards closer exchanges at all levels.
Yang has been in Tokyo for a three-day visit at the invitation of the country’s National Security Adviser Shotaro Yachi. He also co-chaired the fourth round of joint political dialogue with Yachi on Monday.
