China’s manned submersible, the Jiaolong, has descended to a depth of 6,488 meters in the Yap Trench.

According to scientists on board, the upcoming dives will be the final dives of China’s 38th oceanic scientific expedition.

Before reaching the Mariana Trench and the Yap Trench in June, the Jiaolong had successfully completed two stages of operation in the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea, which was its 150th dive since August 2009.

With the Jiaolong, China has already been able to deep dive to most of the sea zones in the world and become the fifth country to have deep dive technology capable of reaching more than 6,000 meters in depth.
