A big day in the tech world and for Apple, which has just revealed its latest products and also its latest headquarters. Mark Niu brings us this report from Apple's new multi-million dollar headquarters in Cupertino, California.

 

A first look at Apple's five billion dollar campus, widely dubbed "the spaceship." Inside the new Steve Jobs theater, CEO Tim Cook paid tribute to the late founder while introducing an iPhone that's been redesigned from the ground up - iPhone X .

 

TIM COOK APPLE CEO  "We do have one more thing. We have great respect for these words and we don't use them lightly. We've been hard at work for years on the future of the smartphone."   

 

Named iPhone X because it's been ten years since the birth of the iPhone --- this smart phone costs a whopping 999 dollars. It's larger than previous iPhones with a 5-point-8 inch retina display and with an OLED screen - a similar technology used already in Samsung phones - though Apple claims this is better. It does away with the home button, allowing you to just swipe to go home. Users can unlock the screen just by looking at it through technology called Face ID.  

 

PHIL SCHILLER SVP MARKETING, APPLE "Every you time look at screen it detects face. It's pushed through neural network that creates a map of the face. And see if it's a match."   

 

MARK NIU CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA "And you can also have some fun with Apple's most expensive iPhone ever. It's created something called aniemoji. By using true-depth cameras it can detect and track your face, record your voice. And allow you to send a message as an aniemoji."  Mark asks: Did Apple do enough with the iPhone X to justify a near $1,000 phone   

 

BOB O'DONNELL CHIEF ANALYST, TECHNALYSIS RESEARCH "I think it's a great new phone and I think people are going to be very excited about the iPhone X. All the things we heard about did come true. Unfortunately, there were no surprises for people who like surprises because they delivered on that beautiful quality edge to edge screen. They've got the wireless charging, face ID."

 

TIM BAJARIN PRESIDENT, CREATIVE STRATEGIES "Samsung has wireless charging that works well. Samsung has face recognition, but from what I've used with their technology it doesn't work all the time. And from what Apple's shown us how they're doing it with machines learning and artificial intelligence, it does appear Apple has an edge."

 

But not perfect as on stage the new iPhone did not recognize the speaker's face in the first live demo though it did work later in the show. But Apple says the new Face ID is twice as secure as the old touch ID fingerprint sensor. Apple also unveiled a new Apple TV that supports 4K resolution and the Apple Watch series 3 which has cellular built in, allowing users to make calls without bringing along their iPhone.
