US National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster and Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani held talks in Kabul on Sunday, discussing the security situation in Afghanistan and bilateral ties between the two countries.
McMaster arrived in Kabul on Sunday morning. He is expected to assess the current anti-terrorism situation in Afghanistan during his visit and provide more information for the US government on whether to increase the number of US troops in the country.
McMaster is the highest-ranking US official to visit Afghanistan since President Donald Trump assumed office in January.
The US has some 8,400 troops in the country, with about 5,000 others from NATO allies. In 2009, President Obama ordered a troop "surge" of 30,000 additional soldiers to Afghanistan, Business Insider reported.
