Tokyo has named its newest baby panda. City governor Yuriko Koike announced
on Monday that Ueno Zoo's 3-month-old giant panda is called Shan Shan in
Japanese, or Xiang Xiang in Chinese. The name, which means fragrance, was
chosen from hundreds of thousands of suggestions and received the approval
of Chinese authorities. Ueno Zoo said the panda is healthy and growing
rapidly, weighing in at 6 kilograms and measuring 65 centimeters in length.
The zoo added that while the cub can't yet see clearly, it does react to
light. Xiang Xiang was born in June to the zoo’s resident giant panda, Shin
Shin, which means Fairy.
