In southwest China's Tuxiang township, 400 kilometers away from the Chongqing metro area, 60 percent of children are left behind by their parents.
A month ago, 127 children from four schools in the town drew their new year wishes, and then posted them online. Less than a month later, backpacks, clothes, toys, shoes and stationaries poured in from all over the country to this impoverished small mountain town. Many of the children's parents work in the coastal region of China and have not seen them for years, though some will come back for next month's Spring Festival. In China, nine million rural children are living without their parents who have moved to find work. Nearly 90 percent of these children, aged less than 16, are cared for by their grandparents, with four percent forced to live on their own.
