Philippine security forces intensified a bombing campaign on homes and other buildings on Saturday to recapture parts of the southern city of Marawi, where they have been battling Islamist militants for five days. At least 56 people have died in the fighting.

Air force planes and rocket-firing helicopters pounded on homes and government buildings held by the ISIL-linked Maute and Abu Sayyaf armed groups. Military officials say they will step up bombing raids and try to resolve the problem within three days. Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte says there is still room for negotiations, but the government will continue to fight with the militants who don't want to lay down arms.
