Hong Kong has earmarked around 640 million Hong Kong dollars (82 million US dollars) for celebrations to mark the upcoming 20th anniversary of the city’s return to its motherland, according to a press conference held by local authorities on Thursday.
The HKSAR Government plans to hold more than 320 activities under the theme of "Together • Progress • Opportunity" including distributing fortune bags to over 15,000 elderly people and families in need, Chief Secretary for Administration Cheung Kin-chung said.
The purpose of the activities is to enhance communication and cohesion among Hong Kong people, Cheung added. “It is not activities of public relations, but action of caring.”
This year’s July 1 marks the 20th anniversary of the return of Hong Kong to its motherland and the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
