US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Friday that there can be "no doubt" that Syria has retained some chemical weapons, Reuters has reported.
Mattis made the remarks during a press conference with Israeli counterpart Avigdor Lieberman. He warned President Bashar al-Assad's regime not to use them and declined to comment on the number of weapons Washington believes Syria has retained.
"There can be no doubt in the international community's mind that Syria has retained chemical weapons in violation of its agreement and its statement that it had removed them all. There is no longer any doubt," Mattis told media during a visit to Tel Aviv.
An Israeli assessment has found that Assad's regime was still in possession of "a few tons" of chemical weapons, AFP has reported citing a military official.
The US carried out an air strike against a Syrian airbase earlier this month over an alleged chemical attack on a rebel-held town.
