Back in January, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Foreign Ministers of the Quartet of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States and Chile in Santiago. The meeting's outcome shows the positive results of cooperation between China and Latin American countries.
WANG YI CHINA FOREIGN MINISTER "We think this meeting has been a great success. It marks a new beginning, it is a handshake between Latin America and the Caribbean, and China, across the Pacific Ocean."
The meeting adopted the Declaration of Santiago which showed the willingness of both sides to deepen cooperation and seek common development in the new stage. The Declaration of Santiago pointed out that the rise of emerging markets and developing countries is a trend in the world's development and both sides are committed to keeping the world's peace and continually promoting sustainable economic development.
Also, the meeting reaffirmed the principles of the "Charter of the United Nations". Meanwhile, the declaration reached a consensus on deepening cooperation under the "Belt and Road" framework and will provide opportunities for Latin American and Caribbean countries.
The declaration also said that the two sides will promote the China-Caribbean Economic and Trade Cooperation Forum and enhance people-to-people exchanges. Safeguarding human rights and gender equality are also affirmed in the declaration. To recognize and respect CELAC member countries' cultural diversity is at the top of the document as well.
