We move into the water for the Volvo Ocean Race, the round the world yacht race. A couple of years ago, Chinese vessel, Dongfeng claimed a podium finish, while also winning an historic homecoming leg into Sanya. The crew are back, with more experience, and that was evident, as they would be leading the second leg of the contest, as the race heads towards Cape Town. But an error would prove costly.
With about two-thousand nautical miles to go until they reach South Africa, Dongfeng, lose a big chunk of time after delaying their jibe --or changing course, as they travelled south too long. They got sucked into light air, losing considerable miles on the fleet. After leading for most of the leg, they now appear to be fighting for third.
That gives Spanish boat MAPFRE, a chance to move in front, and find helpful winds further south and move into a 33 nautical mile lead.
The seven boats left Lisbon, Portugal two weeks ago on the seven-thousand nautical mile marathon and are expected to arrive in Cape Town by the weekend. Conditions are getting more testing as they get close to the latitude of the Roaring Forties and their first taste of the Southern Ocean – freezing water, mountainous waves and strong, icy breeze. No one covers the Volvo Ocean Race like we do.
