Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and a high-ranking government delegation left Hanoi for the US on Sunday night, kicking off a three-day visit featuring talks with US President Donald Trump.

This is the Vietnam leader’s first visit to the US as prime minister and also the first time since Phuc and Trump were elected that a senior Vietnamese official will meet with President Trump.

The prime minister and president will meet on Wednesday to discuss bilateral ties and regional cooperation. Some analysts have predicted trade and situation in the South China Sea as among the topics on the agenda.

Phuc will also invite Trump for an official visit to Vietnam on the sidelines of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit which will take place in his country in November.
