In Peru, rights groups and relatives of victims have urged the Inter-American Court of Human Rights to rule against a pardon for former president Alberto Fujimori who was jailed for human rights abuses.
CARMEN AMARO VICTIM'S RELATIVE "What we're hoping for is justice - that eventually Alberto Fujimori, who was sentenced to 25 years, goes back to jail, that his pardon will be annulled and that he will return to serve his 25-year sentence."
CARLOS RIVERA PAZ VICTIMS' ADVOCATE "It is said that he has health problems but we question that on the basis of these political acts and the absolute irregular and illegal procedures that have taken place to favor Mr. Fujimori."
Fujimori was pardoned by President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski on humanitarian grounds late last year. The former leader had been serving a 25-year prison sentence for crimes that included commanding death squads that killed suspected civilian sympathizers of left-wing guerrillas that his regime was fighting. The pardon, which was condemned by international rights groups, triggered a series of nationwide street protests.
