In this year's art exams, young Chinese are working hard to get into the fun and highly promising domain of e-gaming. At Communication University of China, a newly-set digital entertainment major is proving popular with applicants.
This major tests students' ability to play games and to design and make a game. It tests ideas and students' ability to help run a firm in the gaming industry.
Chen Jingwei, director of the game department in Communication University of China, said: “We are looking for talents who will become the brains of this industry. They would be creating the next big things in the market . And their education would prepare them not only for the e-sport industry, but also other areas in digital entertainment.”

Applicants need more than a knowledge and love of e-gaming. Organizational skills and an eye for aesthetics are crucial. A recent report says e-sport sales in China reached more than 50 billion yuan (7.3 billion US dollars) last year, a ten-fold growth since 2010. But professionals in the industry number only in the tens of thousands.
“We set up this major because we are so short of professionals. We need them to give life to e-games. To create products that will be loved and make China's e-gaming industry great,” Chen also said.
Turning a hobby into a career is a dream for many people. In e-sport, there's a world of possibilities.
