The popularity of China's annual Dragon Boat Festival has begun reaching foreign shores with countries like Thailand taking to dragon boating in a big way. Special events are regularly held in Thailand, a country where many have Chinese ancestors.

According to legend, the ancient Chinese poet Qu Yuan threw himself into a river and boats were launched in an attempt to save him. Today, the story is re-enacted each year by races between boats decorated with dragon heads and tails. But it’s also a competitive sport and Thailand’s national squad takes part in races around the world.

"There are now around 50 dragon boat clubs in Thailand with more than a thousand members,” said coach Banchong Sukrong.

Thailand is gaining a strong reputation in dragon boat racing and the national team has won a number of gold medals in international competitions.
