Lesotho is a tiny country completely surrounded by South Africa. Famous for its Drakensburg and Maluti mountains, the small kingdom has become a popular destination for tourists looking for unspoiled nature.
As CGTN’s Sumitra Nydoo reports, the scenery here, about a four-and-a-half-hour drive from Johannesburg, is beautiful.
Maliba Lodge, the only five-star lodge in Lesotho is isolated in the mountains, but is often fully booked with 84 percent of visitors coming from abroad, mostly from Europe and the US.
Tourism contributes around 5.5 percent to Lesotho’s gross domestic product, with the majority of tourists coming from South Africa.
The country is largely underdeveloped, but ironically this may be the source of its unique attraction for travelers trying to escape the concrete jungle of big cities.
