The UK's right-wing populist party, UKIP, lost its only Member of Parliament on Saturday when Douglas Carswell chose to quit.
Carswell said he was leaving UKIP "amicably" and added he would continue to serve as an independent lawmaker. Carswell said UKIP played a leading role in last year's Brexit referendum to leave the European Union, but said it was "job done."
Carswell defected from the Conservative Party in 2014 to become the only UKIP member in the House of Commons, but has long clashed with the party's founder and former leader, Nigel Farage.
