For international team tennis we go to Perth, Australia for the final of the Hopman Cup in which Switzerland were taking on Germany. After Roger Federer gave the Swiss a 1-0 lead in the best of three tie by beating Alexander Zverev in three sets, Germany's Angelique Kerber levelled the score by defeating Belinda Bencic in two. That meant all four players would square off in mixed doubles with the championship on the line.
That's Federer serving with the score tied at 2-2 in the first of the shortened sets that only go up to four points. The Swiss are chasing their third title with the last one coming in 2001 when Federer teamed with Martina Hingis. Bencic goes crosscourt and Feds steps in to put away Kerber's reply.
It goes to a tiebreaker and a beautiful return from Bencic to Zverev's feet sees the Swiss take it 5-3. Clearly the Aussie crowd approves.
Federer would be a monster at the net and the 36 year old has been in incredible form, an ominous sign for the rest of the field at the upcoming Australian Open. Roger is going to put away the smash and the Swiss later break the Germans for a 3-2 lead.
It's now championship point, and Federer's high bouncing serve is out of Kerber's reach as he and Bencic win the second 4-2 to complete a 2-1 victory. Roger won all four of his singles matches and will be the favourite to defend his Aussie Open crown when the tournament begins January 15th. Germany are still seeking its first Hopman Cup since 1995, as this year the trophy is going home with Switzerland.
