Russia has allowed access to Chinese instant messaging app WeChat after the service was blocked last week, Russian telecommunication watchdog Roskomnadzor said Thursday.
Roskomnadzor said WeChat has provided the information necessary for it to be included on a Russian register of organizers of information distribution on the Internet.
Last week, Roskomnadzor blocked WeChat due to its violation of Article 15.4 of the law on information, saying its operator failed to provide the contact information necessary for registration with authorities.
The block of WeChat within Russia triggered widespread complaints, as some WeChat users in Russia were unable to log in or send messages.
WeChat, developed by IT giant Tencent Holdings with over 889 million active users worldwide, is more than a chat tool. In China it also offers services like cashless payments, doctor appointment booking, ride-hailing, and train and flight ticket booking.
