Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi arrived in Uruguay Tuesday afternoon after attending meetings in Chile. This year, China and Uruguay celebrate 30 years of diplomatic relations, as the two countries work to strengthen political and economic ties. CGTN's Joel Richards is in Montevideo.
JOEL RICHARDS MONTEVIDEO "After productive meetings in Chile, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is now turning his attention to bilateral relations with Uruguay. China and Uruguay established diplomatic relations 30 years ago. There will be an official celebration of the milestone on Wednesday. Wang Yi is due to meet with President Tabare Vazquez in the morning, as well as his Uruguayan counterpart Rodolfo Nin Novoa. There's expected to be news on easing of business visas and procedures to help boost trade. There have been on-going talks over a potential Free Trade Agreement between China and Uruguay which would allow this country of nearly three-and-a-half million to compete on a more even footing when it comes to agricultural exports. Soy and beef are two of Uruguay's strongest exports. Last December, Uruguay hosted the Latin America and China Business Forum that brought together hundreds of businesspeople from both sides. Over 20% of Uruguay's exports are sent to China, according to government agencies, and it would appear that there is political will on both sides to develop that relationship.
