‍Wang Tao, also known as Taoray Wang, was one of the many Chinese designers featured during New York Fashion Week in the United States, but one of her most recent designs was seen on a much bigger, global stage.
Wang is the designer behind the dress worn by Tiffany Trump during the inauguration of her father as 45th president of the United States. Trump's youngest daughter was spotted with her mother—the president’s ex-wife—at Wang’s show in New York this week. This was Wang Tao's sixth New York Fashion Week. Her designs are known for combining modern art with traditional Chinese elements, and her work is highly regarded by her peers.
Wang has a diverse background bridging three different continents, and this is reflected in her work. She says her Chinese heritage is deeply rooted, and it's evident in the cuts of her designs and the colors used in her clothes.
"The velvet sleeves have Chinese style hems, and the color contrast has peacock blues and rose reds in them. Also, the lining is 100 percent silk,” she said.
“Our designs are made in Shanghai, using many craftsmen living in Shanghai. We Chinese people often say that something can only be felt, not said. When you wear it and feel right, then everything is right." She added.

The US president’s daughter attended the show to support Wang. She also had kind words for the designer.
"I think it's gorgeous,” she said. “Last September, I had the chance to come to her show and, honestly her tailoring and her aesthetics design are just unparalleled. She is such a sweet, sweet woman as well and I'm wearing Tao now. Her designs are just truly spectacular."
New York Fashion Week is one of the world's four major fashion shows, collectively known as the "Big Four," along with Paris, London and Milan. Of the 70 designers at this year's New York Fashion Week, 16 are Chinese.
