Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is in Sao Tome and Principe on the last leg of his Africa tour. Ahead of talks with Prime Minister Patrice Trovoada, he's been warmly received by his counterpart, Urbino Botelho. China and the island nation are seeking to strengthen diplomatic ties that resumed in 2016, after Sao Tome and Principe severed relations with Taiwan.
Wang Yi has stressed that the One China policy is the basis for the resumption of bilateral cooperation. He's expressed optimism on partnering with Sao Tome and Principe in areas like infrastructure, tourism and agriculture. Over the past two years, the two nations have enjoyed a steady improvement in personnel exchanges.
