A total of 243 items from Russia's Peterhof National Museum relating to the historic Romanov dynasty are on display in southwest China's Sichuan Province.

The exhibition in Chengdu features items such as oil paintings, sculptures, clothes and furniture and the display aims to help visitors learn more about the history of Russia, said deputy curator Tamara Nosovich.

Many elegant treasures make up the exhibition including Empress Catherine II's throne dating back to the 1760s, which features velvet, lace and gilding.

The throne also features imperial regalia: the Russian crown with the orb and cross bear a cartouche featuring Catherine's monogram composed of the interlaced letters "I" ("Imperatritsa"), "E" ("Ekaterina") and the number "II".

The exhibition also features a number of original oil paintings of figures from the House of Romanov including Alexander II, Empress Maria Alexandrovna and Nicholas II.

Nosovich said she is looking forward to presenting further exhibitions in Chengdu, promising a haul of porcelain collected by Peter the Great next time.

The Peterhof National Museum is one of Russia's most important and it stores and displays cultural artifacts relating to the Romanovs who ruled over Russia from 1613 until the February Revolution in 1917.

The display is free to the public and is open until August 27.
