As we approach the peak travel time for the spring festival, railways are getting increasingly busy. This year, the Guangzhou railway corporation has provided free tickets for migrant workers to travel home. CGTN's He Weiwei follows one of them on board. Take a look.
Guangzhou South is China's busiest railway station, with more daily trips than any other. It's where Huang Yunfei, his wife and two sons find themselves early on this morning, among the big crowds. Huang is a migrant worker in Guangzhou. His hometown, 800 kilometers away, is a remote and poverty-stricken area in the neighboring region of Guangxi, where his family is officially registered as impoverished. But for the first time, Huang and his family are traveling home by high-speed train for the spring festival.
HUANG YUNFEI MIGRANT WORKER "We used to return home by long-distance coach, as it's so difficult to get a train ticket. A single coach trip can cost as much as 400 yuan per person, for my family it's a big cost."
This year, many migrant workers in Guangzhou are getting free tickets, which helps them save a bundle of their hard-earned.
ZHAI YANMEI HUANG YUNFEI'S WIFE "It used to take us 12 hours to return home by coach, and I'd usually get car-sick. The train is much faster and more comfortable."
HE WEIWEI GUANGZHOU "It's the third year that the Guangzhou railway corporation has designated special trains like this during the spring festival, they provide a total of 4,300 tickets for free for students and migrant workers like Huang from impoverished areas."
ZHANG JIE TRAIN CONDUCTOR "All I want is to make sure these passengers have a safe and pleasant journey."
Huang's train ride takes about six hours. From there, it's another two by bus before he and his family finally reach their home village. In the past, they missed the spring festival due to expensive tickets, but this year, they'll make it home on time. HWW, CGTN, Guangzhou.
