These pairs of hands don't get rest on International Workers' Day

May 1 is International Workers' Day but people with these stained, scarred hands are not getting any rest today. A series of pictures captured in east China’s Jiangsu Province illustrates how laborers are working hard through the holiday and are devoting their efforts to their trade and community.

80-year-old fisherman Yao Gongfa continued his daily routine, sitting at the fishing port, tightening his fishnet and making up the fishing tools that have accompanied him during his entire life. His suntanned hands, the deep-creased scars from handling heavy fish on the cords showed the laborer’s devotion to his career.

79-year-old Jin Wenbiao has spent his whole life in his cropland, cultivating grains and vegetables as a livelihood. Even now the old man in his robust condition continues his farm affairs, weeding and caring the seedlings with his hands that are covered with mud and dust.

Constructor Hu Zengjiang has been lifting and shouldering constructive materials for 16 years. From steel wires and other heavy objects, the powerful, rough hands of his have helped make and leave a mark on every detail in one modern city.

This pair of soft, gentle hands belongs to a young nurse named Li Yi. Aged 20, she recently became a nurse and now tends to the sick and hospitalized. Dried out with constant cleaning and sterilizing, the young lady will soon gain her recognition as a devoted laborer to society.

66-year-old Zhu Wencheng has not ceased his working hands during this holiday. Sanitation workers like Zhu, get their hands dirty by keeping many of China's cities clean and tidy, contributing greatly to a modern city's maintenance.

Hu Hongxiang, a 22-year-old teacher, keeps on correcting homework for her students. You can always pick out hands that belong to a teacher since their fingertips are constantly dyed by chalk and red ink.
