A man carrying knives was arrested on Thursday near the British Houses of Parliament on suspicion of “planning a terrorist act”, London police confirmed, adding that there were however no injuries.
According to the statement from the police, the man, in his late twenties, was arrested in the early afternoon following a stop and search as part of an ongoing operation.
Police said that knives were recovered from the suspect. Two knives could be seen on the ground in a video clip taken at the scene and aired by BBC.
The man is being detained under the Terrorism Act and is in custody in a south London police station, police said.
The investigation is still underway.
British police closed roads leading to the residence of Prime Minister Theresa May and some ministries in central London.
Armed police and police wearing white forensic suits were also seen at the scene. The main gates to Parliament were also closed after the incident.
Theresa May’s spokesman said she has been informed of the incident and would be kept up to date.
The incident comes one month after a deadly attack near the Houses of Parliament, which was claimed by the ISIL. Four people were killed and some 50 were injured after a man drove a car into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge.
