1958 Munich Air Disaster: Manchester holds memorial service

60 years ago yesterday, eight Manchester United players, three club staff, eight journalists, two crew members and two passengers lost their lives in the Munich air disaster. After a European Cup match in Belgrade, the team's flight back to England was interrupted by a re-fuelling stop where the aircraft crashed after an attempted take off on a runway covered in ice. Tuesday, the football community in both cities were in mourning during commemoration services.
Over in Munich more than one-thousand fans of both Bayern and United were in attendance at the Riem airport where the accident took place. Ex-Bavarians forward and now executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, along with club President Uli Hoeness, were also there and gave speeches as many German fans sung United's name. As the plane crashed, seven of the squad were killed instantly while England international Duncan Edwards died in hospital 15 days later. At the Partizan stadium, where United had won the night before, wreaths were also laid. For Hoeness, the pouring of emotion 60-years on just goes to show how much the team known as "The Busby Babes" meant to supporters.
