South Korea’s defense authorities said on Monday it was in talks with Washington about holding joint drills with the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier strike group.
"Consultations are under way (between the two sides) in connection with the exercise," Moon Sang-gyun, a spokesman for the Ministry of National Defense, said at a press briefing, without giving further details.
Moon made this remark as the Vinson approaches waters off the Korean Peninsula amid speculation that Pyongyang could conduct another nuclear test.
On Sunday, Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) said that two Japanese destroyers joined the USS Carl Vinson carrier group for drills as the US strike group crept closer to the Sea of Japan.
