Chinese violinist makes debut at Berliner Philharmonie

36-year-old Chinese violinist Gao Can performed his debut concert at the Berliner Philharmonie on Wednesday in Germany. 
The two-and-a-half-hour performance featured renditions of renowned pieces, including “Violin Sonata in A Major” by Cesar Franck, “Violin Sonata No 7 in C Minor” by Beethoven, “No 6 Sonatas for Solo Violin” by Eugene Ysaye and “Carmen Fantasie” by Franz Waxman.

The Chinese violinist also played three Chinese works: Zhou Long's “Taiping Drum”, Li Zili's “The Fishermen's Harvest” and Sha Mukun's “Pastoral Song.” It was the first time that the pieces had been played at the venue. 
Gao, born in Chongqing, started playing violin at four, and then came to Beijing to study at the affiliated school of the Central Conservatory of Music.

In 2008, 28-year-old Gao, studying at the Central Conservatory of Music, became a visiting scholar of the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati in the US, and later taught there. 
In 2010 at the Verbier Festival in Switzerland, Gao performed with cellist Mischa Maisky and Violist Yuri Bashmet, a performance that catapulted him to fame in the field of classical music.
