Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks with Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. The leaders decided to lift bilateral ties to a strategic partnership of cooperation. A series of bilateral deals were also signed after the talks.
During the meeting, Xi noted that the two countries had developed bilateral ties on the basis of the five principles of peaceful coexistence since the establishment of diplomatic relations 41 years ago.

He added that the comprehensive partnership of cooperation the two sides forged in 2010 has yielded fruitful results in political, economic, cultural and security areas, as well as in international and regional affairs.
Prime Minister Hasina said Bangladesh is willing to actively work with China under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative and support the construction of the BCIM (Bangladesh, China, India and Myanmar) Economic Corridor.

She added that Bangladesh will continue to stick to the One China policy and support China firmly on issues involving its core interests and major concerns.
The sides agreed to deepen political trust, strengthen high-level exchanges, enhance cooperation within the Chinese-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, and expand bilateral trade scale.
Xi and Hasina also confirmed 2017 as the China-Bangladesh Friendly Exchange Year, when a variety of exchange activities in areas including culture, education and tourism will be held.

The leaders also decided to intensify cooperation in international organizations like the United Nations, and to reinforce coordination on global issues such as development, energy, and food security. The two countries will push forward regional connectivity and development prosperity within the South-South cooperation framework.
After the talks, Xi signed cooperation agreements for 26 projects covering Chinese investment in Bangladesh in sectors such as the Belt and Road Initiative, capacity cooperation, telecommunications, energy, electricity, diplomacy, marine, disaster management and climate change.
