US President Donald Trump authorized the release of a controversial memo on Friday. The document accuses the FBI of abusing its surveillance powers of investigation into whether Trump's presidential campaign colluded with Russia in election meddling. CGTN'S Chuck Tinte has more.
A four-page memo, written by Republican lawmaker, Devin Nunes, purports to show the Justice Department and the FBI as deeply politicized, anti-Trump agencies. It alleges that the federal probe into possible collusion between Trump's campaign and Russia was a product of political bias. Trump condemned the incidents described by the memo.
DONALD TRUMP US PRESIDENT "It's a disgrace- what's going on in this country is a disgrace."
Many of those Trump is accusing of bias are his appointees- including Republicans. In a statement, the FBI suggested the memo is misleading and said the agency was not given enough time to review it before the committee voted to release it. Democrats say the memo mischaracterizes classified information and was intended to undermine Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russia probe that grew out of an earlier FBI investigation.
