To golf and the last round of the PGA's Fedex Cup Playoffs. Justin Thomas needing a charge on the final day of the Tour Championship to cap off an incredible year. The 24-year-old had won a tour high five times, including his first major -- and a strong finish would put in position to take home the 10-million dollar bonus, that goes to the winner of the four-event series.
Thomas started the day five back of leader Paul Casey, but the Englishman shot a 5-over 73, to fall out of contention -- allowing the American to move up. He almost eagles this approach on 7 -- to start his climb.
Rookie Xander Schauffele also makes a move, he was two back to start the round, but is able to forge into a tie for the lead. His approach on 13 is tight. He gets to minus-11.
He would share top spot with Kevin Kisner, but the American gets into trouble on 15 -- finding the drink, and that sees his chances evaporate.
Thomas would continue his charge -- on 17 from the fairway he is able to get it close, as it lands within a few feet of the cup. He birdies and gets to 11-under, and a share of first.
Back to Schauffele now, and putting from the fringe on 18, this is for eagle -- and looks to be right on line, but slips by.
The 23-year-old steps up and barely makes his birdie putt, and takes a 1-shot lead.
Thomas can tie things and force a playoff, with a birdie of his own on the closing hole, but his putt just veers off course.
Schauffele wins the Tour Championship, but it is Thomas that wins the entire FedEx Cup Playoff. He gets a new fruit bowl.
More importantly he gets the 10-million dollar bonus cheque, which goes to the top golfer in the season-long points race. Schauffele is the first rookie to win the Tour Championship since it began in 1987.
