The Kambalny volcano erupted for the first time in almost 250 years on Saturday, according to Russian media reports. The eruption, thought to be the first since 1769, came as a surprise to volcanologists monitoring volcanic activity on the peninsula, which is home to a large number of volcanoes.
The volcano erupted an ash cloud up to six kilometers long, which was visible by Earth-observation satellites. An aviation orange alert has been issued, which restricts flying in the area.
Kambalny is a 2,156 meters tall stratovolcano located in the far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia, and it is the southernmost active volcano in Kamchatka.
