Expert: Moderate South Korea president positive for US ties

Stephan Haggard, director of the Korea-Pacific Program at the University of California in San Diego, told CGTN that new South Korean President Moon Jae-in has two key issues on his agenda: one is foreign policy, and the other is the sluggish growth that the country has experienced since the Asian financial crisis. 
Haggard said the newly-elected president also faces challenges in areas like corporate governance, social issues, and trade.

Moon is expected to take a moderate attitude toward the DPRK and against the THAAD deployment in South Korea, but Haggard suggested there is room for the US and South Korea to cooperate on these issues.

Haggard said Moon is very likely to resume the six-party talks in which China plays a central role, and send an envoy to the DPRK soon. Both China and the US will keep an eye on whether the DPRK will show interest in meeting with that envoy.
