Syria Crisis: Russia to host peace talks in Sochi
[]
Over a thousand delegates are expected to gather in Sochi for discussions on rebuilding Syria. Russia is hosting a new round of Syrian peace talks in the coastal city. The UN special envoy to Syria has decided to attend the conference. But Syria's main Kurdish groups are boycotting the talks, saying it will undermine UN-sponsored discussions. CGTN's Alaa Ebrahim reports from Damascus.
ALAA EBRAHIM DAMASCUS "Syrian groups start arriving in the Russian city of SOCHI late on Sunday, while sources over here in Damascus say the conference will only begin on Tuesday the 30th and will last for one day.
The official name of the meeting is the National Syrian Dialogue Conference in SOCHI, and in addition to over a thousand participants from Syria who- according to Russian organizers -were chosen to reflect the widest group possible of society, including NGO's, trade unions, political parties and activists, the event will also be attended by regional and international powers like Iran and Turkey and most importantly by the UN. A well-informed source in the Syrian government told CGTN the talks in SOCHI could help push through the stalemates of GENEVA peace talks.
The conference is expected to come up with a document that calls for lifting sanctions, helping refugees return and starting the process of rebuilding the war-torn country. And though this the biggest event of its kind as it is expected to gather around 1600 Syrian participants making it the largest conference on Syria since violence broke out in 2011, the main opposition body the HNC said it won't be attending the conference, though CGTN has learned that several opposition figures will take part in the Russian sponsored conference.
We also learned that the conference will establish several specialized committees. The most talked about of which is the committee assigned with discussing the constitution although it is still unclear what capacities this committee will have and how its findings will contribute to constitutional reforms mentioned in the UN security council resolution 2254 that is considered a roadmap to the political process in Syria.
And though many here in the Syrian capital say that now might be the time to push ahead with a political solution, especially after ISIL has mostly been defeated, the majority remains skeptical on whether any tangible result will come out of SOCHI."
