The Beijing Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Language Service Initiative was launched on Friday by the Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China and the State Language Commission.

The initiative will rely on the language resources of the State Language Commission and call for joint efforts from related departments, universities, institutions, enterprises and social forces to create a favorable language environment, provide a high-quality language service and demonstrate the charm of the Chinese language, making the Games a "remarkable, extraordinary, excellent" event.

Executive vice president of the Beijing 2022 Organizing Committee Zhang Jiandong said a language service is the basis of match organizing, stadium construction, promotion and market development.

The initiative contains five major projects.

To conduct language technology integration and service, a multi-lingual service system and APP will be developed, as well as machine translation and interpreting.

To provide translation and language training, experts will also be gathered to guarantee the quality of official documents and to recommend judges for the open bidding of language service provider.

As for Olympics language environment optimization, the multi-lingual signs in the stadiums will be examined and a book of standard vocabulary of the sports in Beijing 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games will be published.

It also includes training of foreign language speaking volunteers, and exhibition and experience projects of Winter Olympics language and culture in multiple ways.
