Following several good-will gestures from both sides, the DPRK and South Korea held rare high-level talks at the border village of Panmunjom on Tuesday. A few agreements were achieved.
The DPRK confirmed it would send a "high-ranking" delegation to participate in the Winter Olympics in South Korea, including athletes, cheerleaders and journalists. The two sides also agreed to hold separate military talks to reduce military tension and create a peaceful environment on the Korean Peninsula. Moreover, they will reinforce bilateral contacts, visits, exchanges and cooperation in a variety of fields. The DPRK and South Korea have also decided to stick to all the documents adopted in the past on inter-Korean issues, and agree that all inter-Korean issues must be solved by the two sides only. Tuesday's high-level meeting was the first since 2015. Five senior officials from each side took part. Meanwhile, South Korea has proposed reunions of families separated by the Korean War sometime around the traditional New Year holiday.
