U.S. Gymnastics Abuse Scandal: Three national team board members resign
[]
In the U-S, three members of the Gymnastics board have handed in their resignation in the wake of the abuse scandal involving former team doctor Larry Nassar. The 54-year-old is awaiting sentencing for molesting more than 100 women, and currently hearing testimony from victims face-to-face.
In a statement, USA gymnastics confirmed chairman Paul Parilla, vice chairman Jay Binder and treasurer Bitsy Kelley have all left their posts. The sport's governing body in the country also terminated its agreement with the Karolyi Ranch training base in Texas, a place where a number of Nassar's abuses occurred. Ex-organisation President Steve Penny handed in his notice last March after complaints surrounding the handling of issue when the allegations first came to light. In response, USA Gymnastics have pledged to promote further athlete safety in a bid to prevent abuse with a new "safe sport" policy. Nassar is already serving a 60-year sentence for possession of child pornography and will be sentenced at an unconfirmed date this month.
