Chinese researchers have started laying the foundation for the country's fifth research station in the Antarctic. The site is on Inexpressible Island in Terra Nova Bay in the Ross Sea.
The researchers have spent more than 20 days in harsh conditions to prepare for construction. The Ross Sea is a deep bay in the Southern Ocean. It's considered the least altered marine ecosystem on earth. It's known as a living laboratory that could tell the life history of the Antarctic. China has built four Antarctic research stations over 30 years of research. Changcheng and Zhongshan serve as two perennial stations, and Taishan and Kunlun are the two summer stations.
