In Australia, Sydney has been hit by spectacular thunder-storms in the midst of an extraordinary heatwave. Storm systems have rolled across the city delivering lightning strikes, tearing off roofs and felling trees. The city has been experiencing its hottest spell in nearly 80 years, with temperatures having reportedly reached 47 degrees Celsius. Local reports several blazes have also been recorded and a number of properties have been destroyed in the states of Victoria and South Australia.
