Cross-Strait Relations: Both Chinese mainland and Taiwan benefit from past 30 years of communication
[]
The past 30 years of communication has seen many landmark meetings and pacts. Taiwan and the mainland become closer as the cooperation in various fields strengthens. Now, the mainland is Taiwan's BIGGEST market of export and the island's MOST popular destination of investment. By the end of 2016, that piecemeal investment added up to 70 billion US dollars, in tens of thousands of projects. The trade volume has also increased. 30 years ago it was just 50 million US dollars. Now, it's 190 billion US dollars. And there have been many arrangements to facilitate business even more, one of them being the Cross-straits Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement or ECFA. Former leader Ma Yingjeou said recently while marking the 30 years of exchanges, that this agreement has been crucial in boosting the local economy, and neither should backtrack now, or lay opportunities and existing goodwill to waste.
