Russian President Vladimir Putin said US missile strikes in Syria were in violation of international law and seriously hurt Moscow’s ties with Washington, Reuters reported.
The US targeted a military air base in western Syria with 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles on Friday morning local time. The Syrian army said six soldiers were killed by the US‍ missile strike.
‘Aggression against a sovereign nation’
President Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia regarded the US military attack as an act of “aggression against a sovereign nation” on a "made-up pretext” in an attempt to distract the world from civilian deaths in Iraq.
Russia does not believe Syria is in possession of chemical weapons, the Reuters report said. Washington said the missiles were launched in response to a suspected chemical weapons attack on a rebel-held town on Tuesday.
Russia-US deal suspended
According to the Russian Foreign Ministry’s statement, the country has suspended the memorandum of understanding on flight safety in Syria with the US following the missile strike. ‍
