We head down under for the Hopman Cup. The mixed team tournament, where hosts Australia were facing Germany for a place in the final. The Germans led by former world number one Angelique Kerber. The two-time grand slam winner, needing a strong performance to try and lift her country into the championship match for the first time since 1995 -- which coincidentally was the last time they won the event.
Kerber at the bottom of your screen, is facing Daria Gavrilova and races out to an early break in the opener thanks to winners like this, en route to a 6-1 pasting. The German remains in control in the second, up 4-2, she runs her Australian opponent all over the court, and eventually smashes home the winner at the net, earning another break. The 2016 Aussie Open winner, seals victory in the next game, with an easy putaway. Kerber has won all three of her singles matches at the event and gives Germany a 1-love lead in the team tally.
On the men's side -- Thanasi Kokkinakis on the left for Australia is facing Alexander Zverev. The German rips a forehand winner in the 11th game of the opener, helping him grab a break, en route to winning the set 7-5. The second set needs a tiebreak, and the world number 209 gets the upperhand in the extra session, powering home this volley, and takes the frame, setting up a decider.
Off to the third, Kokkinakis rips a forehand up the line in the fifth game, helping break the young German.
And the Aussie would hold the rest of the way, and when Zverev can't return this serve, victory is sealed. Australia win the match, and force a winner take-all affair in mixed doubles.
And we pick up the action in the doubles match, with Germany serving and trailing 1-love in the first, when the two teams engage in a fantastic rally, Kerber in the pink, at one point lays down a drop volley that Gavrilova gets to, the German can't control the return, allowing Kokkinakis to fire it home. Australia take the set 4-1.
In the second, the Germans are in control, leading 3-1 and trying to wrap up the frame, and do so, on another long rally, Gavrilova puts a little too much mustard on this return and it goes long, as the Europeans win the set 4-1. Off to the decider, and the match on Zverev's racquet -- and the world number four's serve is too hot to handle, as Germany topple Australia and reach the final for the first time in 23 years. They face Switzerland for the title.
