South Korea’s candlelight vigil protests continued for the 17th week in a row on Saturday, which also marked the fourth anniversary of President Park Geun-hye’s administration.
An estimated 800,000 people rallied in downtown Seoul, holding posters calling for Park’s impeachment and an extension of the special investigation. Protesters holding banners with slogans against the deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system were also spotted.

A protest group also displayed a publicity video against THAAD. Protesters said that even by granting part of its land to the government, the Lotte Group could not expect to be exempt from the corruption scandal.
The Lotte Group earlier announced that it intend to accept the land exchange and offer its golf course in the Seongju region for the deployment of THAAD.
According to the protesters, many residents in Gimcheon and Seongju counties have rallied against the deployment.
Protesters also gathered in front of the Constitutional Court, demanding the speeding up of its review of the legality of Park’s impeachment to end her administration.
On the same day, Park’s supporters also rallied, urging the court to reject the impeachment against the president.
