Peru has been pummelled by heavy rain for over three months, and the situation does not seem to be abating. The city of Piura, in northwestern Peru, has been flooded since torrential rains fell for more than 15 hours last Sunday.
The rain caused the Piura River to burst its banks, leaving the downtown district submerged under a meter and a half of water.
Four deaths have been reported so far. Some 10,000 people started evacuation to shelters and will stay there for as long as one month. Military personnel have placed barriers of rocks and sandbags near the river banks, and partial reconstruction will commence.
Since December of last year, flooding and mudslides caused by heavy rains have claimed at least 90 lives and left more than 120,000 people homeless in Peru.
