The sixth Legislative Assembly election in Macao Special Administrative Region wrapped up on Monday morning. Our reporter Mao Dan brings us the details.
MAO DAN MACAO The results come a record-high turnout for the elections in the Macao Special Administrative Region. 57% of the 300-thousand registered voters cast their ballots.
Of the 26 members elected, 14 came through direct elections and 12 through indirect elections. The remaining seven seats of the Legislative Assembly will be appointed by the Region's Chief Executive Chui Sai-on within two weeks.
All 22 conservatives and 4 democrats of the newly elected lawmakers, have voiced their commitment to building a better Macao by addressing some of the thorniest issues such as housing, transportation and infrastructure. This is especially urgent following the damage caused by last month's typhoon.
I hope they will work for the stability of society and improving people's livelihoods.
Macao needs overall changes. For me, I pay more attention on areas like transportation, education and cultural reservation.
There are issues such as eduction, elderly care and housing that need to be addressed. I hope new lawmakers can help Macao find solutions.
Macao will mark the 18th anniversary of its return to China this year. Opportunities for Macao's future development will include a national master plan of building a Greater Bay Area, connecting Macao with neighboring Hong Kong SAR and Guangdong Province. Macao will also continue in its role as a bridge between China and Portuguese-speaking countries.
