Russian President Vladimir Putin has urged the world to set aside concerns caused by President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw the US from the Paris climate accord. Speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Putin called on countries to increase efforts to curb global warming.

"You shouldn't make a noise about this, but should create conditions for joint work," said Putin, adding that he "would not judge" Trump over his decision.  

The Russian president said he thought there was still time to reach an agreement on the landmark climate change deal, despite the US saying it would quit the pact. "Don't worry, be happy," Putin told the forum.

Putin also said that Trump's promise to negotiate new conditions for the US leaves hope for reaching a compromise before the deal takes effect in 2021. He added that US participation is essential for the success of global efforts.

Russia is the biggest emitter of global greenhouse gases not to have ratified the deal. 

Putin on 'new phase' of economic growth 

Putin also insisted that Russia's economy was entering a "new phase of expansion", as he sought to push economic recovery. 

The country experienced one of the longest recession in two decades, sparked by a slump in oil prices and Western sanctions over Ukraine. 

Putin said the economy had grown for the third successive quarter and that foreign investment had climbed to a three-year high, despite ties with the West hitting their lowest ebb since the Cold War ended. 

Putin says Russia struck no secret agreements with Trump team

Putin also maintained that allegations of a secret deal between Moscow and Donald Trump before his inauguration as US president were "hysteria."

"There was nothing concrete, zero. It's just hysteria. Should I give you a pill?" Putin told a moderator when asked about a possible deal.

Putin accused the US of carrying out "crude and systematic interference in Russian affairs for many years".
