Authorities have evacuated residents from areas in New Orleans that are expected to be affected by the approaching storm. Experts say Nate is set to become a Category-one hurricane by the time it hits the US central Gulf Coast over the weekend.

The greatest threat from the storm will be strong winds and a storm surge. The National Weather Service has put much of coastal Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, under a hurricane warning.
